I love today’s technology.
I used to hate it, honestly. I wished, for a long time, that I lived in the 1700s, when life was simpler and I would have far fewer decisions to make. Of course, it sounds silly now, knowing that they didn’t have electricity or plastic back then—but a few years ago, I hadn’t thought about any of that. I’m over it, now. I’m pretty happy with where and when I am.
Because when I am has technology enough to keep me connected with friends and family across thousands of miles of ocean in only seconds, where even just a hundred years ago it would have taken weeks, and even earlier would have taken months, for a hand-written letter to get through the post. Now, I’m all about letters; feel free to send me some, and I’ll do the same to you. But I’m also all about efficiency. Maybe it’s just old-fashioned impatience, but I’ve found that sometimes I just need to get in touch with someone right away, within a matter of hours—or minutes—or seconds, even. And snail mail just won’t do in those situations. In those moments, I need a cell phone, or e-mail, or Facebook, or IM—something fast. In that way, I guess I’m like Ricky Bobby, but we don’t have much else in common. Thank goodness.
And thank goodness for modern technology! Be seeing you.
